Tournament Manager Support - FAQ

Questions

How do I move tournaments (data) from one computer to another?

  1. First the Tournament Manager should be installed on both the source computer (computer you are copying data FROM) and the destination computer (computer you are copying data TO).
  2. BACKUP data from the source computer. Run Tournament Manager, pull down the ROSTER menu and select BACKUP DATA. Backup to a blank floppy disk. Take the disk out and open the tab on the disk to make sure it is write protected.
  3. RESTORE the data onto the destination computer. Put the Backup floppy disk in the destination computer's disk drive. Run Tournament Manager, pull down the ROSTER menu and select RESTORE DATA.

After you restore the data you will have on the destination computer exactly what you have on the source computer. Advanced users: Tournament Manager backups all data into one file called TMDATA.ZZP. This file can easily be "emailed" to the destination computer to be restored.

Its important to remember, when you restore a backup...the data in the backup (golfers, tournaments, courses, etc) is placed on your computer...any existing data is overwritten by the "restored" backup.  In other words, restoring a backup DOES NOT MERGE info in the backup with data already on the computer...the restored backup REPLACES existing data on the computer with the backup.

Tip:

Did you know there is a tutorial video that may answers your question?

  1. Put your CDROM in
  2. Click Tutorial Videos, click Tournament Manager
  3. Run the "Moving tournaments (data) from one computer to another" video.

More info:

Did you know you can always make a backup to your harddive and copy the backup file to where ever you wish.

  1. Select Backup Data
  2. Click "Backup to another drive"
  3. Drop down "Save In" box and select DESKTOP.
  4. Click SAVE.

After it has save file...look on your desktop for the file TMDATA.ZZP. This is your backup file. Use Windows to copy (drag and drop) to any folder, drive, or even email it to somebody.

Do I need to know how many golfers are in a tournament before setting the Tournament's "Parameters" (i.e. number of 2,3,4,5, or 6somes) that will participate in the tournament?

No. After you have signed up golfers for a tournament, you can always go back to the Tournament Parameters and specify/change how many 2,3,4,5, or 6somes will play.

Example: You think 100 players will participate in the upcoming tournament, so you specify 25 (4-somes) in tournament parameters. You go to the Sign Up Players sheet and "signup" golfers and find you have 104 golfers that want to play. To change tournament parameters, simply click the Tournament Parameters tab and specify that 26 (4-somes) will play.

Can I play more than one course for a multi-day tournament?

Yes. Click the Tournament Parameters tab, set the number of rounds for your tournament and the course that will be played for each round.

How do I get Tournament Manager to automatically build complete even teams if I don't have enough (or too many) golfers playing?

Here are some examples of how to solve this problem:

Example #1
Assume a tournament with 100 golfers and you want Tournament Manager to automatically build 25 foursomes, but only 99 sign up to play.  On the SignUp sheet the first two golfers are called "Blind Draw" (one female the other male). In this example, you would signup a "Blind Draw" to play, so the total number of golfers is 100.  When you automatically build the foursomes, one foursome will have a "Blind Draw". This will be in essence a 3-somes.  If it is a "team" event, pick at random a golfer (blind draw) on another team and the blind draw will inherit his/her handicap and score, so team standings will be correct. To give a blind draw a handicap, double-click the blind draw and enter the handicap.

Tip: If you have multiple "blind draws" you can also "lock" the "blind draws" on different teams to assure that two blinds never play together. To lock a player on a team, check the lock option in the "lock" column or double-click the golfer and mark the "Lock on Current Team" option.

Note:  If you choose not to do the above, you can also manually assign a golfer to any team by dragging and dropping the golfer on the correct team, or double clicking him/her and assigning the team number you want him/her to appear on.

Example #2
Assume a tournament with 100 golfers and you want Tournament Manager to automatically build 25 foursomes, but 101 sign up to play.  You want one team to be a 5-some. After you automatically build 25 foursomes...one golfer will be left out. To manually assign the "leftover" golfer to any team....drag and drop the golfer onto a team, or double click him/her and assign the team number you want him/her to appear on. This team will now have 5 golfers.

Tip:

You can control who is left out by signing up the last player (player 101) AFTER automatically building 25 foursomes with the 100 "signed up" players.

How do I post scores for a scramble, and print out scramble results?

For a scramble, post the team's scramble score (one score) to any player on the team. Does not matter who.

To print out scramble results:

  1. Go to reports, and select report "Team Results", "Scramble"
  2. Select Gross or Net.

Note:  If you select Net Scramble, Tournament Manager uses the "Team's" handicap.  How the team's handicap is calculated is determined by the options you set on the Tournament Parameters form.

How do you run a Stableford (Point) Tournament?

Tournament Manager does not require you to "tell it" in advance what type of standings you wish to show.  To show results for any type of tournament, simply select the report that displays the standings "format" you wish to view.

To show Stableford Point Tournament results:

Make sure how you want to award points is correct

  • Click the TOURNAMENT PARAMETERS tab to see how your tournament is setup.
  • Click the ADVANCED OPTIONS on the Tournament Parameters form. Bottom right corner displays how points
will be awarded for par, birdie, eagle, etc. Values can be changed at anytime.

To show Stableford Point Results

  • For individual standings....
Go to reports and print out report "T5. Individual Results", "Points".  Or click "Tournament (Custom Reports)" and create your own Stableford standings report to show whatever you wish to show.
  • For team standings....
Go to reports and print out report "T6. Team Results", "Aggregate", "Points"

Tip:
You can even show Points awarded on the main "Tournament Sheet". Pull down the VIEW menu and select "Custom Views". Load the sample custom view called "Results-hole-by-hole with Points". Note these are only sample views, you can create a view to show anything.

How do you run a skins competition?

To show skins results, simply go to reports and print out the "Skins Results" report.

Usually not everyone participates in the skins competition, so Tournament Manager lets you indicate which golfers will participate. To "mark" a golfer in the skins competition, double-click the golfer to bring up his/her information form and type "S" (or any flag you wish to use) in the "Report Flag" field. When you print the Skins Report, instruct Tournament Manager to only include players with a "S" in the report flag in the skins report. The report flags also allow for multiple selection criteria. For example, assume you have some players that wish to participate in Gross skins, some in Net skins, and others in both. You could mark the report flags with a G for gross skins, an N for net, and a GN for both. When you print the skins report you can instruct Tournament Manager to include only players with a G in reports flag on the Gross Skins and an N in reports flag for the Net Skins report.

To print Gross Skins report...

  1. Go to reports and select report..Skins Gross.
  2. Click the SELECT PLAYERS to INCLUDE button.
On report filter form for "Report" flag type in G...since you only want players with a G in reports flag
on the gross skins report. You can also indicate only particular flights, men, ladies, etc to appear on the report.
  3. Close filter and display the report. Only golfers with a G report flag appear in the Gross skins report.
To show Net Skins report....
  1. Select report..Skins Net.
  2. Click the SELECT PLAYERS to INCLUDE button.
On report filter form for "Report" flag type in N...since you only want players with a N in reports flag
    on the net skins report.
  3. Close filter and display report. Only golfers with a N report flag appear in the Net skins report.

How can I find golfers quickly and change information for multiple golfers quickly?

Tip: To quickly find a player in a long list, type the first few letters of the player's last name or
type his/her ID#.

Tip: To change values for multiple players, highlight the players you wish to change the value for. Click
the [Edit] button. Type in the appropriate values/info and click OK. All players will now have this
value/info.

Tip: Tournament Manager uses the standard Windows keys to select multiple items (players) from a list. Hold down SHIFT
key while clicking to select a range of items (players) from a list. Hold down the CTRL key while
clicking to select multiple individual items.

Tip: To mark all players in skins, pull down the EDIT menu and click "Select All". All players will be
highlighted. Right-click any player and select "Edit player's Tournament Info". Mark the reports flag
with whatever item you use to indicate skins....and click [OK]. All players are now "in skins".

Tip: To lock or unlock all players, pull down the EDIT menu and click "Select All". All players will be
highlighted. Right-click any player and select "Edit player's Tournament Info". Check or uncheck the
"Lock On Current Team" box and click [OK]. All players are now locked or unlocked.

Tip: If you are going to let Tournament Manager automatically build teams, it does not matter which team you initially
sign a golfer up to play on. You are going to later let Tournament Manager build the teams.

Example: How can you change an item for many golfers with just one edit?
Assume you have your golfers divided into two flights...A and B.  You want to put all A flighted golfers on the Blue tees and B flighted golfers on the White tees. How can you quickly do this?

  1. While viewing the Tournament Sheet, pull down the view menu and select DEFAULT VIEW. This assures you
are looking at the default view.
  2. Pull down the VIEW menu and remove the check from SHOW TEAMS...team lines are hidden. (Only players are shown)
  3. Pull down the VIEW menu and select SORT TOURNAMENT VIEW. Select to sort the sheet by FLIGHT. Click OK to sort.

The purpose for the above 3 steps is to simply show your golfers on the screen sorted by flight.
  4. Now click your mouse on the first golfer in flight A and hold the mouse button down and drag down until you have every golfer in flight A highlighted.
  5. Right-click your mouse and select "Edit player's tournament info" on the pop up menu. On the player info form select the BLUE tees and close the form.

Now all the highlighted players in flight A are on the BLUE tees.  Repeat steps 4 and 5 putting B flight golfers on the WHITE tees.

My golfers all have a 0 (zero) handicaps in the tournament...why?

If your golfers have a handicap in the "Membership Roster", but not in a particular tournament you have them in, then most likely all your golfers have an index of 0 and you've told Tournament Manager to convert this index to a handicap for this tournament.  Solution:

  1. Click the [Tournament Parameters] tab to see tournament parameters.
  2. The option "Use Player's Index to calculate handicaps" is checked.

When this option is checked, Tournament Manager calculates handicaps using the golfer's index:

handicap = index X (slope of tee played / 113)

Thus, if a golfer's index was 0, then:
    handicap = 0 X (??? / 113)/> handicap = 0
  3. So, So, UNCHECK the option "Use Player's Index to calculate handicaps" and close form.
  4. Now the 0 handicaps will disappear and correct handicaps will appear.

Tip:
You can see exactly how a player
's gross handicap is calculated...

  1. While viewing the Tournament Sheet, double-click a golfer.  His/her tournament info form appears.nt>
  2. Click on the Gross Handicap box and a description of how the handicap is calculated appears.

I'veI've updated new handicaps in the Membership Roster but they do not appear in the Active Tournament, why not?

When you update handicaps in the Tournament Manager's Membership roster, Tournament Manager does not automatically change handicaps in tournaments that have been previously started, or in any "old" tournaments. (When a tournament is started handicaps are "at that moment" copy from the Membership Roster and set for the tournament.) />
To instruct Tournament Manager to update an "already started" tournament with "new" handicaps from the membership roster:

  1. Go tGo to the Tournament's Signup Up Player or Tournament Sheet.
  2. Select "Update handicaps from roster" from the TOOLS menu.>
  3. Type YES to update.

NoteNote: You can also change a golfer's index/handicap directly on the tournament sheet. Simply double-click the golfer and type in the new value.

How can I see exactly how a golfer's "Tournament Handicap" is calculated?

To see how a golfer's Tournament Handicap is being calculated:

  1. While viewing the Tournament Sheet...double-click a golfer to see his/her "Tournament Info" form.nt>
  2. Double-click the "Tournament Handicap" box...a window will appear showing step-by-step how this was calculated.

Note:

Tournament Handicap = (Gross Hcp  X  Allowance) + Handicap Adjustment

The Allowance (Handicap percent % allowance) and Handicap Adjustment are set on the "Tournament Parameters" form.

How can I see exactly how tie breaks are done?

Tournament Manager has several tiebreak options....

  1. USGA - Recommended by United States Golf Association.
Ties broken by who wins last 9 holes, last 6 holes, last 3 holes and finally if still tied who wins last hole (18th hole).
  2. By Handicap holes. Who won first handicap hole, who won second handicap hole, etc.
  3. Sequential hole 18 to 1...Who won 18th hole..if still tied, who won 17th hole, etc...
  4. Sequential hole 1 to 18...Who won 1st hole..if still tied, who won 2nd hole, etc...

To use any of the above tie-break options, simply sort the report by the option you wish.

Tip: A quick way to "see" how how any of the above tie breaks are done.

    • Select REPORTS menu.
    • On Report menu select the last option, "TX. Tournament Custom Reports"
    • Load the Custom Report.."(View Net/Gross Tiebreaks)".  This will show each tie break and how the ties are broken.
  5. Create your own tiebreak. You can sort and sub-sort standings by any items for tie-breaking purposes.  For example, you could sort a standings report by total net, and sub-sort by handicap.  Any golfers tied on net score, would be further sub-sorted by handicap. Thus a golfer's handicap would decide how the tie is broken.  You can sort a report/view on up to 3 different items.
  6. Tie break by fractional nets, fractional quotas, or fractional handicaps. Handicaps, nets, and quotas can be displayed to two decimal places for tie breaking purposes. To specify that you wish handicaps and nets calculated to 2 decimal places:

    • Click the "Tournament Parameters" tab, to view Tournament Parameters.
    • On Tournament Parameters click the "Advanced Options" tab.
    • Check the option "Display handicaps and quota to 2 decimal places"
Any report of view will display these values to 2 decimal places.

How do I update (transfer) golfers from Handicap System to Tournament Manager?

If you have the Handicap Management System you may want to transfer golfer information (including names, ID#, phone, address, group text, miscellaneous, updated handicaps, etc) to the Tournament Management System. Golfers MUST have unique ID#s for the transfer utility to work correctly.

  1. Pull down the TOOLS menu and select "Transfer to/from other modules."
  2. Under the heading "Handicap System Transfers", click the button [Transfer golfers to Tournament Manager 9.x] and the transfer box will appear.
  3. If the roster to transfer information from, does not appear in the box under "Handicap System Roster", click on the [Find Handicap Roster] button. Select the roster to transfer information from.
  4. Set the "Tournament Manager Roster" to transfer golfers to. Click on the [Find Tournament Roster] button.
  5. Check the appropriate items to transfer.
  6. Set the appropriate transfer parameters. The following transfer parameters can be set:

Transfer only golfers in the handicap roster who are marked to print. If you check this option only golfer's "marked to print" in the Handicap System will be transferred.

Convert 18 to 9 hole handicap. If you mark this parameter, an eighteen hole handicap will be divided by 2 to create a nine hole handicap.
  7. Click the [Transfer Golfers] button to transfer data.

Note: If a player does not exist in Tournament Manager he/she is added to the roster, otherwise the player's information is updated. The transfer utility determines a match by ID#. If you have two players with the same ID#, info for each player may not transfer correctly.

Note: To save time, Tournament Manager remembers any options you set. So the next time you transfer golfers, default options are already set.

How can I assign flights manually?

Tournament Manager can automatically assign player and team flights using golfer's handicaps or scores from a previous round.  To automatically flight players or teams, select "Automatically flight players/teams" on the TOOLS menu.

But what if you need to flight golfers using some other criteria, how would you do this?

Example:

Assume you need to flight golfers by age. The A flight will be golfer's under 55, and the B flight golfers 55 and older.

To quickly assign golfer's flight by age:

  1. Create a "custom" view that includes the golfer's birthday.  Once a view is created you can use it at anytime.

Tip: Did you know there is a tutorial video that answers this question?
    A. Put your CDROM in
    B. Click Tutorial Videos, click Tournament Manager
    C. Run the "Creating a custom view" video.

  2. Sort the view by birthday.
Pull down the VIEW menu and make sure "Show Teams" is NOT checked.
Pull down the VIEW menu and select SORT TOURNAMENT SHEET.  Sort by birthday. The list is sorted by birthday.
  3. Click mouse on a player and drag down to highlight a block of players you want in a particular flight. Right-click any selected player and select "Edit player's Tournament Info". Set the FLIGHT, and click [OK]. All selected players are now in specified flight.

What is meant by the term flight?

Flighting is a way of breaking golfers and/or teams into different groups (flights) for standings purposes.  Or any type of sorting purposes you need.

For example you could have a tournament with 120 golfers..30 in the A flight, 30 in the B flight, 30 C flight, 30 D flight. Usually flights are based on handicaps so like handicap golfers can compete against one another.  But you can specify flights using any criteria.  For example, you could base flights on golfers ages...or any criteria.  When you show standings, you could have an A flight winner, B flight winner, C flight winner, and D flight winner. You could even have winners across all flights, or across multiple flights, such as an AB flight winner, etc.

If you don't care about flights:

  1. Don't pre-SORT your standings report by flights.
When you select to display a report on the screen, Tournament Manager always displays how the report will be sorted. If you choose to sort by FLIGHT, then by TOTAL score, you will see flighted standings. Tournament Manager would first sort by flight then sub-sort by totals. Thus A golfers would appear first sub-sorted by total scores, B golfers next sub-sorted by total scores, etc. Click the button "Select How to Sort Report", and DO NOT sort by flight, but another item, usually TOTAL....then Tournament Manager will not first sort by flight, but just TOTALS. In other words flights are ignored.
  2. Don't display FLIGHTS on reports.
Tournament Manager gives you the option to build custom reports or views. You can build a custom report that DOES NOT even display flights.
  3. Only set the Tournament Parameters to 1 flight.  Then all golfers will be in flight A. Even
if you sort reports by flight, all golfers are in the same flight so it has no meaning.

Tip:
If you wish to not see flights on the screen:
You can even create a "Custom View" that DOES NOT SHOW FLIGHTS.

Tip
