Inserting a Photo on a Web Page

A photo or image can be imported and inserted into certain Page Types only. These Page Types are Document and Spreadsheet. Please refer to Creating a New Web Page.

Inserting a Photo / Image Into a Document Page Type

  1. If you have not created the Document web page into which you will insert your photo, create one now.

  2. Make sure your newly created or existing Document web page (to which you have given a menu label) is selected. With the Menu tab selected, click on your Document page ("USGA Tie Breaker" in the image below). If your page is one that does not show up in the Menu tab, click on the Pages tab and then on the little "+" symbol next to "Documents" file type.

  3. With your Document page selected, click in the location in the content area or the right-hand frame where you want to insert the photo. From the Insert menu select "Picture..."

  4. From the "Insert Image" window, double-click on the previously saved photo or image you want to display on your website, or select it and click the Open button.

Tip: It is sometimes easier to find the image you want if you set the "Insert Image" window View Menu to "Thumbnails."

Note: If you get an error message that your picture size is too big, see Image File Size  topic below.

  1. You now have a Document page with an inserted photo.

Tip: You can move the photo around within Website Designer in the Document page type, but for final results on a web page, you will need to create a 2-column table and drag the photo into one of the table cells to position it where you want.

Inserting a Photo / Image Into a Spreadsheet Page Type

  1. If you have not created the Spreadsheet web page into which you will insert your photo, create one now.

  2. Make sure your newly created or existing Spreadsheet web page (to which you have given a menu label) is selected. With the Menu tab selected, click on your Spreadsheet page ("Member Photos" in the image below). If your page is one that does not show up in the Menu tab, click on the Pages tab and then on the little "+" symbol next to "Spreadsheet" file type.

  3. With your Spreadsheet page selected, click in a cell in the content area or the right-hand frame where you want to insert the photo. From the Insert menu select "Picture..."

  4. From the "Insert Image" window, doubleclick on the previously saved photo or image you want to display on your website, or select it and click the Open button.

Tip: It is sometimes easier to find the image you want if you set the "Insert Image" window View Menu to "Thumbnails."

Note: If you get an error message that your picture size is too big, see Image File Size  topic below.

  1. You now have a Spreadsheet page with an inserted photo. You may also receive the following notice:

  2. To make the entire photo visible, you can use the "Span" method above, or you can expand the cell into which you place image.

  3. To expand the cell, make sure the cell is the active cell by clicking on it. From the Format menu select Row and then AutoFit. Then select Column and then AutoFit Selection.

  4. Alternatively, you can drag Row 2 and Column B lines to expose your photo. Place your mouse cursor on top of the row line, hold left mouse button down, and "drag" the line downwards to widen the row. Repeat with column line, dragging the line to the right.

  5. You now have the photo displaying after having widened Column B and Row 2.

Reducing Image File Size

If you get an error message that your picture size is too large (file size in bytes; not the photo dimensions), the image is most likely in a high resolution format for printing to paper. For display on a screen (web page), a much lower format is used. You will need to reduce the file size of the photo to 150 KB or lower for display on the web. See your camera software for how to save the picture in a website format or see "Reducing Photo File Size" for step-by-step instructions.

Any image to be inserted into one of your web pages must be 150 KB in file size or less. To check the file size of your image, put your mouse pointer on the image file and look at the number beside "Size:". Alternatively, right-button-click on the image file and select "Properties" and look at the number beside "Size:"
